The UK’s food and drink industry has slashed it emissions by more than a third since 1990.

That’s the finding of a major new report from the Food and Drink Federation that shows the industry cut emissions 35%, meeting its carbon saving target seven years ahead of schedule.

In all the industry saw emissions fall by 664,000 tonnes of CO2, and the federation says it is already working on a new goal, revising their 2020 target upwards.

The news was welcomed by UK Environment Secretary Liz Truss. She said:

This report showcases that economic growth and success need not be at the expense of environmental ambitions. For FDF members, producing more with less isn’t a series of buzz words, its an opportunity to increase efficiency and competitiveness.These are real achievements and it’s encouraging to see that FDF remains committed to working with its partners across the supply chain to face the environmental and economic challenges of the future.

The FDF Five-fold Environmental Ambition progress report shows the industry has seen success on a number of sustainability metrics.

In addition to its CO2 target being achieved, companies signed up to the Federation House Commitment have also reduced water use by 15.6%, while those involved in the Courtauld Commitment have reduced the carbon impacts of its packaging by 4.5%.

FDF members have also reduce food and packaging waste sent to landfill, with just 3% of waste from operations now ending up there, putting it on track to meet its zero waste to landfill target by the end of 2015.

The organisation also report that emissions per vehicle kilometre fell 4.3% between 2010 and 2012 thanks to improvements in supply chain and vehicle efficiency.

Jim Moseley, Interim Director General, FDF said co-operation between companies is at the heart of the success witnessed by the industry.

“Our significant achievement of an absolute reduction of 35% in CO2 emissions is a result of continued focus on energy efficiency and low carbon innovation by members and proof this collective approach is working,” he said. “We will continue working together to improve resources efficiency including revising our emissions target over the coming months.”
